Early morning blaze destroys Waxhaw home
Fire destroyed a home at 8003 Battersea Court in Waxhaw's Quelin subdivision Thursday morning.
Union County Communications received a call about the fire at 3:31 a.m. and firefighters responded.
A Waxhaw officer on patrol at the time reported the fire, Deputy Fire Marshal Jon Williams said.
"It's a total loss," Williams said in reference to the damage the fire caused to the home.
The family who lived in the home was on vacation in Florida when the fire broke out. As of Thursday afternoon, the fire was still under investigation and he was not certain of the cause of the fire at that time. He expected to have more information about the fire and the investigation into it next week, Williams said.
The Waxhaw Fire Department responded to the fire and encountered flames through the roof of the two-story house when they arrived, Williams said in an e-mail Thursday afternoon.
Firefighters were able to bring the fire under control within about 30 minutes. According to radio transmissions from the scene, neighbors reported that the family was out of town and on vacation at the time of the fire. The same neighbors reportedly later notified the family about the fire.
Firefighters, law enforcement, Union EMS and staff from the Union County Fire Marshal's Office could still be found at the scene of the fire around 6 a.m. Thursday.
