With Christmas upon us, some parents may plan to surprise their children with a new puppy. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals advises against giving an animal as a gift unless the recipient has shown a sustained interest in an animal and is able to care for the animal.
"In all cases, the ASPCA recommends consulting with the intended recipient of the pet and engaging him in the process of pet selection and timing," the organization said in a statement. "As appealing as it may be to surprise a child or other loved one with an unexpected pet, the ASPCA does not believe that it is in the animal’s best interests."
Selecting a family pet should be a family event.
