Dino is a sweet and energetic puppy waiting for a family.

He is a brown and white Labrador mix. He is neutered and up-to-date on his shots. He has been at the shelter for less than a week. He is believed to be about four months old.

Snow White, a friendly Husky mix, is still available for adoption and Red Bone, a fun and friendly hound mix, is also waiting for a family.

Leroy is a gray and white domestic short-haired cat waiting for a home to lounge in. He is neutered and up-to-date on his shots.

He is very friendly and enjoys being pet. He is an adult cat and fully grown. He has been at the shelter for about a week.

With Christmas upon us, some parents may plan to surprise their children with a new puppy. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals advises against giving an animal as a gift unless the recipient has shown a sustained interest in an animal and is able to care for the animal.

"In all cases, the ASPCA recommends consulting with the intended recipient of the pet and engaging him in the process of pet selection and timing," the organization said in a statement. "As appealing as it may be to surprise a child or other loved one with an unexpected pet, the ASPCA does not believe that it is in the animal’s best interests."

Selecting a family pet should be a family event.

The Union County Animal Shelter will be closed for the holiday from Monday, Dec. 24 until Wednesday, Dec. 26. They will open again on Thursday, Dec. 27.

The fee for adopting a dog or a cat is $85. The fee includes first shots, deworming, a heartworm check, rabies shots, spaying or neutering and a one time "well check" vet visit.

The shelter is on 3340 Presson Road in Monroe. The phone number is 704-283-8303. Adoption hours are Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
