The Adoptables

The Pekingese dogs were sacred in ancient China and could only be owned by royalty. Bella seems to somehow know that.

This female, adult Pekingese has been at the shelter for about a week. She was surrendered by her original owner and is up-to-date on her shots.

Like many toy breeds, she is skittish at first, but is playful, spunky and energetic once she gets comfortable. She likes to run and play with you.

The Pekingese, also known as the lion dog, requires a fair amount of grooming. In addition to their fur, they have a long undercoat which requires extra grooming and will cause shedding. Pekingese — brachycephalic or flat-faced dogs — due to their flat snouts and fur, they do not do well in the heat.

In addition to Bella, Ember, a sweet mixed breed, is still waiting for a home. She is putting on more weight and becoming more outgoing and will need a family without cats.

Bunnie, an adult short-haired domestic cat, is quiet and sweet. She loves being petted and will put her tail up in the air as you pet her.

She was found as a stray, has been at the shelter for about a week and is up-to-date on all of her shots.

Watson, the energetic kitten, is still waiting for a family. Chloe, a black and white long-haired cat, is also waiting for a family, as is Jasmine a nice orange and white cat.

The fee for adopting a dog or a cat is $85. The fee includes first shots, deworming, a heartworm check, rabies shots, spaying or neutering and a one time "well check" vet visit.

The shelter is on 3340 Presson Road in Monroe. The phone number is 704-283-8303. Adoption hours are Monday through Friday from 1 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.
