Revolution is topic of Waxhaw lecture

Apr. 02, 2013 @ 05:40 PM

The Museum of Waxhaws and Andrew Jackson Memorial along with the Waxhaw Weddington Sunrise Rotary Club announce that Tom Phlegar, Colonel, U.S. Army, ret., will give the third lecture of the new Waxhaw Lecture Series. Phlegar will speak at 3 p.m. on April 21, 2013 at the Museum of the Waxhaws on “The American Revolution, as it Occurred in the Carolinas.”

A graduate of the Virginia Military Institute and Duquesne University, Tom Phlegar is past- president and a current member of Mecklenburg chapter of the Sons of American Revolution (SAR), past board member of Charlotte Folk Society and a docent at Charlotte Museum of History.

Phlegar will present the events that occurred in the Carolina backcountry from early 1780 – the surrender of the British at Yorktown. With more battles occurring within 100 miles of Charlotte, NC than all the rest of the thirteen colonies combined over the entire eight year period of war, much is available to be examined.

It begins with the British strategy leading to the campaign in the South and the events that took place over the next 18 months. A detailed description of the Battle of Charlotte will be presented. And battle sites near and around Waxhaw will be discussed.

Phlegar will examine the people, personalities and culture of both sides, telling stories about not just military commanders but civil wars that existed among families and neighbors.

Photos of local sites will be shown with discussion about how places we now pass by often on a regular basis were once the site of a significant historical event.

The new lecture series is co-sponsored by the Museum and the Waxhaws -Weddington Sunrise Rotary Club. Any income received will benefit the Museum and international projects of Rotary.

Tickets are $10, with a $5 discounted cost for full-time students at any level. Reservations are strongly suggested due to space considerations. Reserve online at: http://museumofthewaxhaws.org or call Arthur Lightbody at 704-608-3033.
