County jobless rate falls to 7.2 percent
Unemployment rates in Union County fell to 7.2 percent in August.
The rate in July was 7.9 percent.
In August, the labor force totaled 102,810 people, with 95,419 employed and another 7,391 unemployed and looking for jobs.
All of North Carolina’s 100 counties had lower rates than the previous month. The state unemployment rate is 8.7 percent, down slightly from 8.9 in July. A year earlier, finalized rates were 9.4 percent for August 2012.
Seventy-seven counties had rates between 5 and 10 percent. Another 22 had rates above 10 percent. Only one county had rates below 5 percent.
Statewide, the number of people employed fell by 19,577 people to 4,300,113. The number of unemployed also decreased by 44,354 to total 388,448.
In neighboring counties, Mecklenburg’s rate was 8.5, Cabarrus was 7.7, Stanly was 8.1 and Anson was 10.1. For the Charlotte-Gastonia-Rock Hill metropolitan area, unemployment was 6.3 percent, down from 9.8 percent in August 2012.
