Monroe may soon have a Gander Mountain store.

The company, which sells various outdoor and hunting related items, has stores in 24 states throughout the country.

Jess Myers, a spokesperson for Gander Mountain, said the company does not comment on future store openings until properties are completely closed on and does not release suspected opening dates until then.

For this reason, he could not comment on whether or not the company has plans for a new store in Monroe but did say that it is interested in North Carolina due to the state’s great offering of hunting and fishing enthusiasts, Myers said.

According to Doug Britt, a senior planner with Monroe, Gander Mountain has been issued building, mechanical and electrical permits for renovations inside of the former Best Buy location in Poplin Place mall.

Gander Mountain recently announced plans for a Gastonia location, Myers said.

“A new store generally creates upwards of 70 jobs,” he said.

The jobs the new stores create generally include 20 to 30 full-time employees and 40 to 50 part-time employees, he said.

The addition of Gander Mountain to Monroe will be a great retail draw for the area, Chris Platé, Monroe’s executive director of Economic Development and Aviation, said.
