Indian Trail hot dog stand aspires to franchise

Gourmet hot dogs, fried bologna sandwiches, fish sandwiches and other items can all be found at D-Moe's Famous Hot Dogs, which recently opened in Indian Trail.

Modeled after a 1940's, 1950's era service station, the new restaurant offers drive through and dine-in services and is hoped to eventually become a franchise.

The name D-Moe's refers to Dennis Moser, the owner of the business, who when he was younger was called D-Moe's by a friend.

"We came into this to create a franchise," Moser said.

Plans are to eventually open other D-Moe's restaurants at airports and on college campuses. The one in Monroe is the very first of the franchise and is functioning somewhat as a test and a test kitchen for future restaurants. They welcome customer comments about food and other aspects of the restaurant, which helps when it comes to making improvements to it. The restaurant has only been open a few weeks but is already gaining a lot of attention and has had a number of customers, he said.

"I wanted a concept that was simple," he said.

They work to provide good fresh food to customers as well as a relaxing atmosphere. He was surprised by how well the restaurant is doing so far and is looking forward to possibly opening additional locations in the future. The business' many varieties of hot dogs and milkshakes are some of the most popular items as well as its fried bologna sandwich, he said.

"They're trying to bring a good feeling back to food," Kyle Westerman, a managing partner with the business, said.

In addition to offering a new kind of fast food restaurant in the area, the business also employees local people as well as works to be involved in the community.

They have created about 40 jobs with the business so far, Moser said.

On Dec. 15, people were invited to the business for free photos with Santa. Plans are to also host other community events in the future.
