Mia Famiglia transplants its culinary traditions

Today, Joe Abbate enjoys offering pizza and other menu items to customers of Mia Famiglia Restaurante & Pizzeria in Indian Trail.

The restaurant is family owned and has its origins in Long Island, New York.

His family used to own a pizza restaurant in New York and when he became an adult, chose to go into a similar business himself, Abbate said.

He is one of the owners of Mia Famiglia Restaurante & Pizzeria. The other owner of the business is Dennis Muia, his brother-in-law, who still lives in New York for now and works on helping build the Freedom Tower in the former World Trade Center site. Abbate has more than 20 years of experience in the pizza business and began making pizza at his family's pizza shop at the age of 12, according to the Mia Famiglia Restaurante and Pizzeria website.

"I like working with people," Abbate said in reference to why he enjoys operating the restaurant.

In addition to pizza, his business offers salad, sandwiches, pasta and other menu items. Customers have the option of either eating in or getting their food to go at the restaurant. Working to run the restaurant can be a lot of work but he enjoys working with his family and other members of the restaurant's staff as well as meeting the different customers who stop by. He currently has a 1-and-a-half-year-old son named Giovanni, who has a dish named after him on the menu. Muia's six-month-old daughter, Valentina, also has a dish named after her on the menu, Abbate said.

"I love it, love it," Lynn Arnett, a cashier/waitress, who works at Mia Famiglia, said.

She likes that the business is not far from her home and enjoys working with Abbate and others at the business, Arnett said.
