Belk's kicks off celebration of 125th anniversary
This year marks Belk's 125th birthday and the company plans to celebrate in style.
Wednesday marked the beginning of a five-month-long birthday party. The company commemorated the kick-off by hosting a party for their employees at the company's headquarters in Charlotte.
"This is an exciting day," Johnny Belk, president and chief operating officer, told the gathered employees.
In honor of their quasquicentennial year, the company will be holding numerous events for employees and for customers.
More than 125 exclusive products will be on sale in stores and online. Customers can also register online to participate in the 125 Days of Prizes giveaway, when Belk will give away a prize worth between $500 and $6,500 every day, according to a statement from the company.

In addition to prizes for customers, Belk employees will be giving back to the community with their 125 Day of Service initiative.
They have formed a $2 million partnership with the Points of Light Institute, a Georgia-based nonprofit that connects people with service projects. The employees will serve 225 schools through Belk's regions, but fixing schools or donating supplies.
The celebration will culminate in a May 29 celebration in all stores. May 29, 1888 is the day the first Belk store opened in Monroe.
Belk is the largest independently-owned department store in the country. It operates 301 stores in 16 states in the south. They employ 23,000 people.
