Nash tapped as mayor pro tem
Monroe Mayor Bobby Kilgore along with Council members Freddie Gordon, Surluta Anthony and Debra Duncan were sworn in Tuesday night.
Council member Dottie Nash was unanimously elected as mayor pro tem. Council member Billy Jordan nominated her with Anthony seconding the motion.
The candidates were surrounded by family as they recited the oath of office. Duncan's daughter, husband and an old friend stood around her as she recited it. Kilgore stood next to his wife, children and grandchildren. Anthony's granddaughter held her father's bible as the rest of her family gathered around. Gordon stood next to his wife and placed his hand on the bible.
The standing room only crowd clapped as each candidate finished their oath and returned to their place on the dais.
City council members serve staggered four-year terms.
