Porter Ridge senior dies in wreck
A single-vehicle wreck Sunday night ended with the death of a Porter Ridge High School student who was a little more than a week from graduating.
Samantha Ann Windham, 17, of Indian Trail, died after the 1992 Jeep Cherokee she was driving ran off the road and overturned.
A little before 9:40 p.m. Windham was headed north in the Jeep on Poplin Road. The vehicle ran off the road in a curve. Windham then overcorrected and went back onto the road before going off the left side of the road, hitting a ditch and overturning, First Sgt. M. R. Leach of the North Carolina Highway Patrol said.
“She was partially ejected from the vehicle when it was overturned,” he said.
Windham did not have on a seat belt at the time of the wreck. She died at the scene, he said.
It is possible that texting while driving was a factor in the wreck, but that is not certain. They found evidence that she had sent a text message at 9:36 p.m. Officers responded to the scene and found her body at 9:39 p.m., Leach said.
Windham was a senior at Porter Ridge High School.
The school and school system have a plan in place to support students and staff as they grieve this tragic loss. The plan does include the availability of additional counselors as needed. The school system is keeping her family, friends, and school community in our thoughts and prayers, according to a statement from Rob Jackson, chief communications officer, for Union County Public Schools.
