Parades, fireworks celebrate holiday

Fireworks, flags and patriotism will fill the air Friday as Fourth of July celebrations are underway. 

Monroe’s celebration will be at Belk-Tonawanda Park. Rides and concessions begin at 4:30 p.m. and the fireworks display kicks off at 9:30 p.m. In addition there will be a free concert from 7 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. with Trial By Fire, a Journey-tribute band. 

Unionville will have a Fourth of July celebration and parade. The event begins at 9 a.m. and runs until 3:30 p.m. The parade begins at 1 p.m. 

Indian Trail’s festival begins at 9:30 a.m. and continues until noon. There will be a flag-raising ceremony at 9:45 a.m. in front of the Cultural Arts Center in downtown. At 10:30 a.m. they will hold a Watermelon eating contest and the parade launches at 11:30 a.m. 

Waxhaw will hold a parade and festival in the downtown area. Their parade starts at 10 a.m. In addition, there will be fireworks at nightfall.
