Masked burglar shot dead
A man was shot dead after a foiled burglary early Thursday, according to the Union County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly after 1 a.m., a masked man forced his way into the house at 3425 Lanesboro Road in Marshville. The people living there called 911 to report the masked man was armed.
Someone in the house got a gun and shot at the masked man. He left the house. Deputies responding to the 911 call found the man in the yard, dead from a gunshot wound.
Deputies have not identified the dead man yet, UCSO Capt. Ronnie Whitaker said. The family has not been notified and the medical examiner has not gotten a positive identification of the body.
Nor will deputies identify the person who shot the intruder “until the completion of this investigation,” Whitaker said.
A series of murders has plagued Marshville over the past year. On July 7, 2012, three people - Jerry Marsh, Crystal Dawn Hicks and Ronnie Dale Overcash - were found dead on Landsford Road.
On August 22, David Lee Bass and David Clay Bass were shot dead in front of 3309 Lanesboro Road after a family dispute. Deputies chased Bradrick Layne Wolfe for 20 miles through two counties before arresting him on murder charges.
On August 30, Charles Godwin was found dead inside his Holly School Road home.
