Park Sterling to celebrate grand opening

Feb. 09, 2013 @ 07:15 PM

The Park Sterling Bank at 2742 W. Roosevelt Boulevard in Monroe will hold its grand opening celebration Feb. 11.

The event is being hosted in connection with the Union County Chamber of Commerce.

Construction of the new bank location began about a year ago and they were able to later move in on Dec. 14, Jim Brewer, a market president of Park Sterling Bank, said.

“We have food, drinks and I hope we’ll have some live entertainment. It’s from 5:30 p.m. - 7 p.m.,” Brewer said in reference to grand opening activities scheduled for Monday.

Ron Brown, chairman of the Union County Chamber of Commerce, is also planned to speak at Monday’s event, Pat Kahle, a retail banking manager with Park Sterling Bank, said.

In 2012, a merger was announced between the holding companies for Citizens South Bank and Park Sterling Corporation, which led to Park Sterling acquiring Citizens South Bank for a total of approximately $77.8 million, according to a 2012 statement from Citizens South and Park Sterling.

The merger was effective Oct. 10 of last year. In Union County, there are three Park Sterling locations, which are in Indian Trail, Monroe and Weddington, Brewer said.

Since the merger, former Citizens South locations have been renamed Park Sterling Bank.

“We’re still a full service office, we have an ATM and all of the other banking services,” Kahle said in reference to the 2742 W. Roosevelt Boulevard location.

Park Sterling offers opportunities for wealth management, treasury management and other services to customers, she said.

The merger of Citizens South and Park Sterling allowed for two strong banks to be combined and as a result they are able to provide more for customers. Lately the bank has seen a lot of business, Brewer said.

“I think it’s a combination of visibility here as well as maybe a slight improvement in the economy but we have been busier over the last six months than we had the previous couple of years, we expect that to continue through this year,” he said.

Though the new Park Sterling location at 2742 W. Roosevelt Boulevard has similar features to other Park Sterling locations, that particular location has original artwork and prints from local artist William Brewer, who is the father of Jim Brewer.

Though William Brewer has passed away, his artwork is still well known throughout the area.

His father worked using various mediums that included acrylic and watercolor. He also made prints and even did some woodcarvings, Jim Brewer, said.

“He (his father, William Brewer) passed away about a year ago but Park Sterling is very pro in local art and they were kind enough to use some of my father’s artwork,” he said.

He has two original artworks of his father’s in his office at the bank and some of his father’s prints are on display in other parts of the bank, Jim Brewer, said.

“William Brewer is an icon in Union County and this area,” Kahle said.

She remembers when she moved to Union County in 1986 she would often see William Brewer’s work on display in various public locations. She felt the having Brewer’s artwork in the new Park Sterling location in Monroe would be a natural fit and mentioned her thoughts to the bank’s facilities person. While Jim Brewer has two original artworks in his office, her office has a print of William Brewer’s of the old Union County courthouse, she said.

“So we at the bank, we are thrilled to have some of William Brewer’s art in our building. His (Jim Brewer’s) father was definitely an icon in our community,” she said.

As Park Sterling continues to serve customers, the bank is looking to help improve the local economy through working to offer loans and to help small businesses, she said

“All and all I think this location will help us in gathering a wealth of customers,” Brewer said.
