County earns award for financial reporting
The Union County Finance Department received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.
The certificate is given to county government finance officials for its comprehensive annual financial report for the 2013 fiscal year. It is the highest recognition for excellence in accurate and transparent financial reporting for a governmental body.
Union County Finance Director Jeff Yates was presented the award on behalf of the entire county finance staff during Monday's meeting of the Union County Board of Commissioners.
"The CAFR has been judged by an impartial panel to meet the highest standards of the program, including demonstrating a constructive spirit of full disclosure to clearly communicate it's financial story and motivating potential users and user groups to read the document," Chairman Jerry Simpson said.
The Government Finance Officers Association is a non-profit professional group of 17,500 government finance employees.
Yates led a staff comprised of Debbie Cox, Andrea Robinson, Beverly Liles, April Langston, Amanda Austin, Rosemary Dodd, Candice Helms and Trina Horne. The certificate of achievement is a reflection of an entire year's worth of work by the whole department, he said.
"It's important," Yates said. "It's recognition from our peers that our report provides a clear statement of the county's financial status," Yates said.
