Waxhaw mayor arrested on DWI charges
Waxhaw police arrested Mayor Daune Gardner of Waxhaw early Monday morning with a .18 Blood Alcohol Level.
In addition to the driving while impaired charge, Gardner has also been charged with speeding and driving left of center on NC 16 in Waxhaw.
Gardner was elected mayor of Waxhaw in 2007 and reelected in 2011. Her current term as mayor is scheduled to end in 2015, according to the Union County Board of Elections.
According to a police report, at approximately 12:35 a.m., an officer noticed a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed on NC 16. The vehicle crossed the centerline several times and crossed the fog line. The vehicle was stopped and after a driving while impaired investigation, the officer found the driver to be impaired.
The driver of the vehicle was Mayor Daune Gardner of Waxhaw, who was arrested and charged with driving while impaired, driving left of center and speeding, according to the police report.
The report also lists the vehicle involved in the incident as a 2002 gold Honda Accord.
According to Union County Jail staff, Gardner was released from jail Monday morning on a written promise to appear.
Gardner was previously arrested in September of 2008 in Lancaster County, S.C. for driving under the influence, which was later expunged from her record.
