Piedmont senior dies in wreck
A Piedmont High School student died in a two-vehicle wreck Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 601 North near Deese Road.
Mackenzie Rae Whiteley, 17, was traveling south in a 2006 Honda Accord at the time of the wreck, which officers responded to at 5:35 p.m.
Whiteley's vehicle crossed the center line and ran head on into a 2006 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by Roosevelt Dewayne Nives, Jr., 30, of 340 Center Point Road, Chesterfield, S.C., who was traveling north on the road, Kris Westover, a traffic reconstructionist with the Monroe Police Department, said.
Whiteley and Nives were both taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for their injuries. Whiteley was pronounced dead at the hospital. Nives was treated and released. The wreck is still being investigated, Westover said.
Whiteley, who lived at 5402 Highway 205, Marshville, died at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday from her injuries. She was a senior at Piedmont High School and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. She was scheduled to begin basic training in August, according to a statement from the Monroe Police Department.
"This is so sad and our hearts go out to her family and friends," Monroe Police Chief Debra Duncan said in the statement.
Union County Public Schools learned about Whiteley's death Wednesday morning and extra staff and counselors were sent to Piedmont High School to assist students, Rob Jackson, a spokesman for Union County Public Schools, said.
"She (Whiteley) was part of the student leadership of the JROTC unit at Piedmont High School," Jackson said.
She had been a student at Piedmont High School since her freshman year. As of Wednesday afternoon, a memorial service had not been planned at the school for Whiteley but it is possible one could be planned in the near future, he said.
