Jimmy Bention, Sr., a local pastor and community leader was selected to serve District 1 on the Union County Board of Education.

The seat was previously held by John Crowder, who died in March after about 30 years on the school board. Bention will serve until the next general election in November 2014.

The vote was unanimous, 8-0, with Board member John Collins recusing himself.

Bention is currently the cross country coach at Monroe High School. In the past he has served as president and vice president of the Monroe High School Parent-Teacher-Student Organization. He was the chairman of the Union County Republican Party, chairman of the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council and has been involved in other organizations.
