UCPS fourth grader featured in winning contest photo

A photo of a snow-spattered Indian Trail Elementary fourth grader has taken the top place in the inaugural Union County Public Schools’ Winter Photo Contest.

The top-vote getting photograph, taken by Yesenia Garcia Ayala, depicts a smiling Karen Ayala as she catches snowflakes on her tongue. Her entry received 59 “likes” or votes in the contest, which was posted on the UCPS Facebook page. (Yesenia Garcia Ayala was unavailable for comment at press time.)

Contest coordinator, Don Mace, the UCPS Web Communications Coordinator, said the first UCPS Winter Photo Contest was fairly successful. “We had 48 photos submitted and a total of 356 votes. I would like to thank everyone for their support of this new endeavor.”

Contest entrants had to be 13 years or older to enter and a UCPS Facebook fan. The picture had to contain at least one current UCPS student or staff member and feature a winter scene, preferably with snow.

The winning photo will be featured on the UCPS website and Facebook page, used as snow day banners on the UCPS website and all schools websites, and featured in the local news media.

Mace said the contest is slated to become an annual event. For more information about UCPS, go to the system’s website (www.ucps.k12.nc.us) or become a fan of the system’s Facebook page. It now has more than 6,500 friends.
