Between mediation and the trial, the dispute over the Fiscal Year 2014 budget has lasted about three months, with an appeal ongoing.

So far, the Union County Board of Education has been billed $525,444.26 in attorney fees.

Chief Communications Officer Rob Jackson clarified in an e-mail that the costs are associated with the mediation with the county commissioners, the public records lawsuit brought by the commissioners and for the trial — including preparation and filing.

The Union County Board of County Commissioners budgeted $450,000 for the trial.

According to Public Information Officer Brett Vines, $335,254 has been spent so far. Vines said that included mediation and all costs related to the trial.
