Classroom Central donates school supplies
Classroom Central, a Charlotte-based nonprofit, helped students at East Elementary last week with another backpacks and basics donation.
The group donated more than $17,000 in school supplies to 500 students in the year-round, Title I elementary school in Monroe thanks to donations and sponsors. They also distributed supplies last February.
One student could not pick out his favorite school supply when asked, remarking that he liked all of it. Another student said it was everything they needed when presented with the supplies.
Because some students have backpacks, the organization provides backpacks for 75 percent of the school and gives them to the administration to provide them as needed.
First-grade teacher Katie Chambers said the supplies will help them stay on task in the classroom and are helpful because some students do not have the supplies they need at the school and they definitely do not have them at home.
Last year, Classroom Central served 11 schools and more than 5,000 students in Union, Charlotte-Mecklenburg and and Gaston school systems.
An elementary school backpack contains loose leaf paper, a one-subject notebook, a composition book, crayons, pencils, scissors, a pencil sharpener, a glue stick, a ruler, math flashcards, a jump rope, stickers and a coloring book.
