ButtaBeans offers a vegan menu

Zizi Williams recently opened Butta Beans to offer the people of Monroe and the surrounding areas, a tasty and healthy alternative for dining.

Butta Beans, which can be found at 1514 Concord Avenue in Monroe, has been open about a month.

The new business has an entirely vegan menu, which offers a variety of items, which includes vegan desserts, sandwiches and salads as well as a juice bar and real fruit smoothies.

"We just wanted to create a little diversity in the food options in the area," Williams said.

They realized there were not a lot of options in the area for healthy eating and they wanted to provide some healthy items people could choose from. He and his family currently operate a small take-out place in Charlotte, which also serves vegan food. They had customers and friends who live around Monroe who encouraged them to branch out further and open a restaurant in the area. This led to the opening of Butta Beans. The business gets its name from his five-year-old daughter, who he nicknamed Butta Bean. Since opening, the business has already seen a good amount of customers, but they are still working to get the word out about it, he said.

"We have a variety of options and they don't lose flavor or taste," he said.

He referred to how even though all the restaurant's menu items are vegan and created with alternatives to things like dairy and other animal based products, the food is still just as tasty and flavorful as it would be if they didn't use the alternatives. Instead, the food they offer is healthier and has fewer calories than the more traditional options, he said.

One of the hardest things about having a business like Butta Beans is that people often get scared about how something might taste when they hear the term vegan or vegetarian.  He emphasizes that despite being vegan or vegetarian, the food is still good and does not lose any flavor. He encourages people to stop by to sample some of the menu items at Butta Beans, he said.

He hopes to eventually expand his business and his overall goal is to offer healthier eating options without losing the flavor, he said.

Right now Butta Beans is running on its winter hours, which are Wednesday and Thursday from 12 p.m.- 3 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 12 p.m.- 7:30 p.m. Plans are to add additional hours throughout the week in the spring and summer months.
