Deadly collision claims life of truck driver
A refridgerated tractor-trailer driver hauling produce died when the westbound truck collided with a white Pontiac Bonneville at the intersection of Highway 74 and Secrest Avenue, just east of Hilltop. The accident occurred just after 11 p.m. Monday. Just after impact the tractor-trailer rig overturned and clipped a utility pole on the north shoulder of Hwy 74, pinning the driver in the wreckage. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Pontiac Bonneville was also injured and transported from the scene by Union EMS for treatment. A canine companion traveling with the truck driver survived the crash but fled the scene after avoiding attempts by emergency personnel to apprehend and calm the frightened animal. Crews were on the scene into the morning hours handling clean-up operations. Utility crews were on hand to replace the broken pole and restore power. Fire and police personnel confirmed that the westbound lanes would be closed for several hours for the investigation and clean-up process. As of 4 a.m. the recovery and clean-up efforts were still underway. Identities of the victims were not available on the scene. The Enquirer Journal will update this story as details become available.
