Weddington couple welcomes first baby of 2013
The Dorton Family of Weddington rang in the new year with a new baby girl.
The child was born at 2:37 a.m. and weighed 8 pounds, 11 ounces.
"It's good," Stephanie, the baby's mother, said. "This has been a long pregnancy."
Carolinas Medical Center-Union did not provide information about the first baby born in Union County, but Presbyterian's staff did.
The baby girl did not have a name as of Tuesday afternoon. Stephanie, 36, said they have a few names in mind, but wanted to meet the baby first.
The baby not having an official name is a tradition for the Dorton family. Stephanie said they always wait. Sometimes they do not have a name until the hospital is filling out the birth certificate, she said with a smile.
This is the fifth child for James and Stephanie Dorton and their first girl. The boys are 17, 14, 5 and 2 years old.
Stephanie said she did not think they would ever have a girl. It is also the first female grandchild for Stephanie's mother.
The baby girl already has a great wardrobe, Stephanie said.
Stephanie is a stay-at-home mom and James owns and runs Dorton's Heating & Air in Monroe.
Though James was hoping for a Christmas baby, Stephanie thought Christmas was too early and knew she had to be at home with her family on Christmas day.
"I was hoping for New Year's Eve," Stephanie said. However, her baby girl had other plans.
"I think it will be beat to have a birthday on New Year's Day," Stephanie said.
The baby was born at Presbyterian Hospital-Matthews.
She received a gift basket for being the first child of the new year from the hospital.
