SPCC, shelter team up to improve job search success rate

The South Piedmont Community College Career Cruiser has been in Anson County since its inception. However, they recently moved their services into Union County.

They are partnering with the Union County Community Shelter and other groups to offer assistance with job skills and searching for a job.

The cruiser assists people with resumes, job applications, setting up an e-mail account and various testing and computer skills. People can also take a Career Readiness Certification Test. More than 200 people have taken those.

The cruiser is equipped with a smart board, satellite access and 13 computers.

"(We) just try to equip the folks with some tools that hopefully they can use to get jobs," Toby Carpenter, SPCC career coach instructor, said.

About 835 people in Anson County have used the cruiser's services since 2010.

The cruiser was funded with grant money that limited it to Anson County, Carpenter explained. The grant expired and now the college is expanding the cruiser's reach.

The cruiser will be in Union County the first and third weeks of the month. It will be at the shelter on Tuesdays.

"It's been successful, so we hope to keep that success and bring it into Union County and be even more successful because of the sheer population difference," Carpenter said.

Carpenter worked with Family Case Manager Melissa McCullough to bring the cruiser to the shelter.

Executive Director Kathy Bragg is pleased that the cruiser will be at the shelter.

"It means easy access for folks who are unemployed to go in and get some job-readiness skills and become more employable, more marketable," Bragg said.

Carpenter is also looking forward to expanding and helping people in Union County.

"We can't promise a job, but we can give them the tools," Carpenter said.

Carpenter is still working to finalize the cruiser's times and locations in Union County. Once they are final, they will be posted on the school's website, www.spcc.edu.
