Monroe High band holding fundraiser

The Monroe High School Marching Band will be offering the community a chance to earn discounts at 18 different businesses with 28 different locations.

Band members are selling discount cards for $10. The cards are on sale until the end of the month and are good until Dec. 1, 2013.

They are not coupon cards, Eric Johnson, who organized the fundraiser, said. The discounts are good for the entire year and can be used multiple times.

Participating businesses include Zaxby's, Bojangle's, Oil Express, Sugar Shack, The Monroe Country Club, Big Bob's Barbecue, Lone Star Steakhouse, La Vida Mocha, Captain D's and other businesses, many offering the discounts in multiple locations.

"There's a little bit of everything for everybody," Johnson said.

Proceeds will help the marching band with their expenses. Each student gets $2 from each card they sell, which is put into an account to cover their costs.

"We've got tons of expenses," Johnson said. "We're hoping to go to Charleston in the Spring."

The band is hoping to compete in Charleston.

"Anything else will go toward new uniforms," Johnson said. He added that they need them "desperately."

Their understanding is that the marching band has not had new uniforms in 15 years.

New uniforms can cost up to $400 per uniforms, though prices and discounts vary.

So far, Johnson has received positive feedback about the cards, which they have been selling since the beginning of December. Some people gave them as gifts for Christmas.

Last year the athletic booster club did the same fundraiser. When they decided not to pursue it this year, they handed it to the band. Johnson made a few changes and there are some different businesses involved this year. Many of them support the band during their band camp.
