Wreaths Across America returns Dec. 15

Dec. 03, 2012 @ 05:22 PM

Wreaths Across America wreath laying ceremonies will take place both locally and nationwide on Dec. 15.
The Union County chapter of the organization plans to place wreaths on the graves of veterans throughout the county.
On Dec. 15, the Union County wreath laying ceremony will begin at noon at Lakeland Memorial Park.
"We have about 950 wreaths this year," Ryan Stafford, who is retired from the U.S. Marine Corp and who works with the Union County Veterans Council and Wreaths Across America, said.
Last year, he and others with Wreaths Across America laid 184 wreaths in Union County. Their goal this year was 500 wreaths. They were able to get the 950 wreaths for this year's event with the help of U.S. Airways, which donated 500 wreaths, he said.
Stafford is passionate about giving his time to recognize veterans.
"I've been with the Veterans Council since it started and we have the veterans in our hearts," he said.
Laying wreaths with Wreaths Across America is just another service offered to help and show support for local veterans, he said.
The ceremony at Lakeland Memorial, which is on Highway 200 South in Monroe, is planned to last between 15 to 25 minutes. After the ceremony, volunteers will travel to different cemeteries around the county to lay wreaths. The schedule of what cemeteries will be visited and at what times wreaths will be laid, is still being worked out.
