Victim identified in fatal wreck
A Monroe man died in an early morning wreck Friday while a Waxhaw woman suffered injuries after being pinned in her vehicle for approximately an hour and 40 minutes.
The two-vehicle wreck happened around 7 a.m. Friday on Waxhaw Highway near McNeely Road.
Michael McNeeley of Monroe, who was driving a GMC pickup truck, was headed to his job in South Carolina at the time of the wreck while Susan Young of Waxhaw, was headed toward Monroe in a Jeep Cherokee, Sgt. Steve Morton of the Waxhaw Police Department said.
"One of the vehicles drifted over into oncoming traffic and it was basically a head-on collision," Morton said.
The wreck is still being invested and he expects to have more information about it later this week, he said.
McNeeley died in the wreck Friday and Young was pinned in her vehicle afterwards. It took approximately an hour and 40 minutes to free her from the vehicle and she was later taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. She was able to speak to first responders after the wreck and was listed in serious condition Friday at CMC, he said.
In all, the road was closed about four hours as they worked to clean up the wreck site Friday, Morton said.
