Mick Simpson of Sam F. Keziah American Legion Post 535 in Unionville, a driver for Family Dollar Stores, is the best flatbed truck driver in North Carolina.

For the sixth time, Simpson has been named an American Trucking Association North Carolina trucking champion. He will be representing North Carolina at the National Truck Driving Championship in Salt Lake City, Utah, competing against flatbed drivers from all 50 states.

The ATA annually conducts a contest to find the best truck drivers in America in eight categories. A driver can only compete in one category and this year Simpson chose to compete as a flatbed driver.

To enter, a driver must have an immaculate lifetime driving record and win company, local and state skill competitions. Simpson has an unblemished record of over 4 million miles over 42 years. He has been competing since 1993.

Simpson has twice been a national truck driving champion. In 1996, he won in the four-axle class and in 2009 he won in the flatbed class.

His advice to all drivers: “Pay attention to the road and your surroundings.”
