Jurors view sex tape in Phylicia Barnes slaying trial
Testimony continued Tuesday in the trail of a man accused of killing Monroe teenager Phylicia Barnes.
With Barnes’ older sister Deena on the witness stand, jurors watched a video taken with Deena’s cellphone in June of 2010.
Only jurors and the lawyers saw the video. It was not visible to the whole courtroom.
The video showed a drunken Phylicia Barnes playfully grabbing Michael Johnson, prosecutors said.
Johnson is Deena’s ex-boyfriend. He is charged with killing Barnes in December of 2010.
Her body was found four months later in the Susquehanna River.
Deena Barnes testified the same night the video was taken, she saw Johnson make a pass at Phylicia.
He reached forward as if he was going to touch her sexually, Deena testified. Phylicia just laughed and pushed his hand away.
Asked if she did anything about what she had seen, Deena said she thought about telling her father, but did not.
“I was scared I wouldn’t be able to see Phylicia again,” she testified. “And my whole world right then and there would be crumbling.”
After that incident, her 10-year relationship with Johnson started to fall apart, Deena testified.
On the day Phylicia disappeared, she described Johnson as avoiding her texts at first, but later telling her he wanted to repair their relationship.
She said missing from the apartment where Phylicia was staying was a blue storage bin.
Prosecutors believe Johnson used it to move Phylicia’s body after she was dead.
Her body was later found in a river.
