VFW post to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes
Monroe's Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5464, will host the Fourth Annual VFW Juvenile Diabetes Benefit Run on March 22.
Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at Post 5464 at 712 VFW Road, Monroe, and at 11 a.m. kickstands will go up. The last bike in will be at 5 p.m., according to an event flyer.
All the money raised from the benefit run will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
"Right now we're looking at 60-80 bikes out of here that date," Steve Williams, who along with Roni Anderson of Post 5464 is helping organize the event, said in reference to those already signed up for the benefit run.
The annual event originally started as a benefit organized by the post in honor of Anderson's son, who has juvenile diabetes. Eventually the benefit run became annual and one of the largest events the post hosts. Last year around $2,200 or $2,300 was brought in by the event, Williams said.
"We're just trying to do the best we can for these folks," he said in reference to the money raised from the annual event.
Anderson said she is happy to see the benefit run still being held today.
"I'm just really exited about this year and hope that we continue it for years to come," Anderson said.
She is glad to see it in it's fourth year and feels the number of riders increases every year, she said.
The benefit run on March 22 will begin at VFW Post 5464 and includes various stops in both North and South Carolina. The scheduled stops on the run are Buford's Sports Bar, Big Daddys, Kick Stand 97 and The Other Place (Jimmy Lees). The run will then end back at the VFW post where it started.
The March 22 event will also feature a 50/50 raffle, DJ Todd and a live auction. The cost to participate is $15 for the first hand and $5 for a second hand. Dinner will be provided for all paid riders. In case of rain on March 22, a rain date for the event has been planned for March 23, according to an event flyer.
