Mrs. Verla Shaw Parker, 101, was born November 13, 1912 in Monroe, N.C.

She passed from this life to her eternal home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 24, 2014.  She was preceded in death by her husband, T. Avery Parker, their 5 year old daughter, Nancy, her father and mother, S. Walter and Agnes Helms Shaw, two brothers Benjamin Joseph Shaw and Wesley Vernon Shaw, her son-in-law R. Matt Patterson.

Survivors include one daughter, Helen Patterson, one granddaughter, Avery Capers, one grandson, Ralph Patterson and three great grandsons, Parker, Anthony and Matthew Capers, several nieces and nephews.

Her life was centered on her church and serving her Lord.  Verla was born, grew up, and spent the first 60 years of her life on the family farm.  Her beloved husband, Avery, died of a sudden heart attack at age of 57.  For a year she cared for her sweet mother, Agnes, until her death.

She left the farm, moved into the city and continued her life of service.  She visited the sick and her many friends, whom she made feel special.  Many weeks she would make as many as 20 visits.  Still going strong at 94, she decided that it was time to move to Plano, Texas to live with her daughter and son-in-law.  She already had a church in Plano where she had worshipped for over 38 years during her frequent extended visits.

She was true to what she always said, that like Paul she had “learned to be content whatever the circumstances.”  She found happiness in every setting she found herself.  Now, she can say with Paul, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.  Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness which the Lord, will award to me.
