Richard Leslie Simpson, 62, stepped into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Thursday, January 31, 2013.
Richard was born on January 20, 1951 and lived a life of service in the New Salem community. His generosity and kindness was felt by all who knew him and he will be remembered as a man of integrity who met needs of others by living the admonition of Christ, “Inasmuch as you have done it unto the least of these my brothers, you have done it unto me.” (Matthew 25:40)
Richard was a major presence in the agriculture industry of Union County and North Carolina. He was president of Simpson’s Eggs, a fourth-generation family-owned business founded by his grandfather in 1925. He served in multiple agriculture-related and civic organizations: past president of the American Egg Board and current executive board member, president of the North Carolina Egg Association, the United Egg Producers Board, a member of the Union County Agriculture Advisory Board and current vice-president of Union Power Cooperative, as well as being on the board of directors for BB&T.
Richard was a committed Christian. He served as past chairman of the board of deacons at Benton’s Cross Roads Baptist Church. Richard was the first to volunteer services for any job--from driving the church bus to rolling up his sleeves for the church barbeque.
To know Richard Simpson was to know a man who loved people. He greeted everyone with a warm handshake, a smile and a twinkle in his blue eyes. He encouraged people with his positive outlook and his abiding faith.
Richard’s greatest joy was always found in his family. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Anita Brooks Simpson; his children, Lindsay Simpson Dorr and husband, Paul of Missouri, Kelly Simpson Simmons and husband Jake, and Alex Richard Simpson and wife, Krissy, both of Monroe. He is also survived by his parents, Leroy and Nell Gaddy Simpson; and brother, Bruce and wife Kathy and their children, Emily, Ryan and Julia. Richard’s true joy was found in his four grandchildren, Derek and Olivia Simmons and Caden and Blakely Simpson. A fifth grandchild is expected in July. In the love for his family one finds the legacy of Richard Simpson.
