A Celebration of his Life and Legacy will be held 2pm Friday, March 15, 2014 at Central United Methodist Church, 801 S. Hayne St., Monroe, NC with Visitation 1pm to 2pm prior to the service at the Church. Reverend Sandra Gripper, Pastor of the Langford Chapel CME Church of Monroe, NC will be the Eulogist, Interment with full military honors will follow in Lakeland Memorial Park in Monroe, NC
A Native of Anson County, NC, born Wednesday, March 25, 1936 a son of the late Henry M. and Eva Mae Staton Crowder. He was reared in a family that shared love and faith and was taught to be a strong hardworking family man. He was preceded in death by his Parents; son; DeForest; sister Roseann; two brothers; Donald Wayne and Edward. Mr. Crowder spent his childhood in the Meltonville Baptist Church where he was nurtured in the faith, he was a graduate of West Deep Creek HIgh School in Anson County, NC and Served in the US Army and was honorably discharged with a Good Conduct Metal in 1961 and moved to Monroe, NC and was introduced to his future "Bride", Minnie Massey Crowder, their loved would span for 52 wonderful years, ending with his death on their Wedding Anniversary (March 9th). Mr. Crowder spent many years as an Insurance Agent in the Monroe area for many years, then began his career with Belk's Stores Corporation, where he was a Divisional Manager for 25 years with his retirement in 1993. After retirement he spent five years in Security at Presbyterian / Novant Hospital in Matthews, NC.
In 1981 Mr. Crowder was selected to fill the unexpired term of Jane Thomas on the Monroe City School Board. He beacame the first African American member to serve that body in its 85 year History, he remained on the Board until the Monroe City and Union County School Systems merged in 1993 and the he became the represenative for District 1 where he served until his untimely death. In his 31 year career in school board administration he was honored many times on the State level for his dedication and service to public education, he also served as a member of the Monroe City Planning Board and the Board of Directors of the local chapter of the American Red Cross and current member of "A Few Good Men " of Monroe, NC, Union County Democratic Party, Marshville Masonic Lodge Chapter 270 (PHA) and a Loyal member of the Langford Chapel CME Church of Monroe, NC were he served as Trustee, Member of the Sunday School Department, Lay Council, The Pastors' Aide and past member of the Men's Choir.
He leaves to cherish fond and loving memories to his "Bride", Minnie Massey Crowder of the home; one daughter; Faye Eva Crowder-Phillips (Wayne) of Monroe, NC; two grandchildren he adored; Minnie Chastain Olden (AJ) and Jonathan Wayne Phillips; two great grandchildrenJayden Caron Olden and Zion Faye Olden; two sisters;Jearlean Crowder Polk (James) of Peachland, NC and Eva Grace Crowder Forrest (Mitchell) of Pleasant Seat, MD and a host of neices and nephews, cousins and many family friends.
