Sandra Austin Hefner Marsh, age 59, of Monroe, peacefully departed this world for Heaven on Wednesday, February 20, 2013. Known as Sandy by most, she was surrounded by her family at the time of her death. She fought a good fight since her cancer diagnosis in February of 2012 and remained faithful to her Savior, Jesus Christ, until the very end.
Sandy was the daughter of the late Robert Nance Austin and Dorothy Byrd Austin of Charlotte. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Patsy Johnson. Sandy attended Myers Park High School in Charlotte but spent her adult life in the western part of Union County. Sandy formerly worked for J.H. Plumbing Company, Call Printing, and Arnold Palmer Cadillac. But she is most remembered for her passionate work as a telecommunicator for Union County 911. She had a genuine caring heart for every emergency worker she dispatched. She was always proud to announce she had two sons in law enforcement which reminded her that every person on the other end of the radio had a mother too. She attended Southbrook Church in Weddington and was never shy about sharing her faith in the Lord. Known as “Nama” to her grandchildren, Sandy lived a joyful life full of laughter and smiles. She found her greatest happiness just being a wonderful mother and grandmother.
In addition to her mother, Dorothy Austin of Charlotte, Sandy is survived by her two sons: Matt Hefner and wife, Nikki of Monroe, and Chris Hefner and wife, Kelly of Rock Hill, SC; and one step-daughter: Landis Marsh of Roper, NC. She was proud of her five grandchildren: Gracey, Cameron, Chloe, Jack, Deacon, and her special sixth grandchild, Brooke Whitaker. She also is survived by one sister: Martha Phillips and husband, Bud; one brother: Kevin Austin; former husband and father of her children: John Hefner, and his long time companion, Lynda McCorkle; her favorite long time friend, Ruth Hefner; and many dear nephews, nieces, and cousins.
