Wingate professor publishes book
WINGATE — Wingate University adjunct English professor Maurice Thomas has published a book of graphic art and poetry titled “New River and other poems.” The collection of poems compiled over 30 years connects past and present. The book draws on teaching and memories of Lanes Creek and its people, and describes early settlers of the Carolina frontier and the New River area.
Thomas said he was inspired to complete the collection by sitting in on a graphic arts class taught by Wingate art professor Karen Wheeler last semester. Thomas spent last summer in the mountains completing the book, which he designed himself, drawing on 25 years as co-sponsor of Wingate’s literary magazine Counterpoint.
The book of poetry is available for $15 online at catawbapublishing.com and at the Wingate University bookstore.
