MONROE — Despite a lack of preparation, Monroe High’s boys basketball team opened its season with a 28-point victory on Monday.

The Redhawks whipped visiting Parkwood 78-50, dropping the Rebels to 1-1 on the year.

Most of Monroe’s key players are members of the football team as well. Since the Redhawks went to the second round of the state playoffs, there has been a short turnaround to the basketball season.

“We were rusty as far as basketball shape,” Monroe coach Johnny Sowell said. “I’ve only had two days with the team … overall, I was pleased with the way we came out and shot the ball.”

The Rebels had no answer in the post for Issac Blakeney, who scored 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds.

Blakeney, a three-sport star, has committed to Duke University for football next season.

Monroe’s Jamison Crowder added 15 points on the strength of 3-for-4 shooting from 3-point range.

Senior guard Shamiir Hailey, a returning starter, was out for the game with a minor back injury.

“His back’s been bothering him all week, but nothing too serious,” Sowell said.

Sowell expects Hailey to play when the Redhawks travel to face Piedmont for their first game in the Rocky River 1A/2A Conference this evening.

PHS girls improve to 2-0

The Parkwood girls team (2-0) ran over the Redhawks 58-31.

Parkwood’s Michelle Brown led the way with 15 points and five rebounds, while Tori Tsitouris added 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Rebels out-rebounded the Redhawks 37-25.

Monroe’s Shakira Jordan and Rae Moore each had seven points, while Kathryn Bention grabbed 11 rebounds.

Parkwood will travel to square off with Charlotte Country Day today. The Rebels swept the boys and girls games against CCD earlier this season
