Cavs, Panthers headline 2A all-region team

MONROE — Cuthbertson High won the Rocky River Conference regular season championship in boys soccer in its first year of existence, and as a result, the Cavaliers were honored with three players on the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association 2A all-region team.

Junior Jon Lewthwaite was selected after scoring a team-high 12 goals in the regular season. He also had six assists.

Sophomore center midfielder Andrew Gebhart also made the squad along with goalkeeper Trent Johnson.

Johnson, a junior, had four shutouts and also scored three goals in helping the Cavs finish with a 17-5-1 record. Gebhart ended with four goals and an assist.

CHS advanced to the third round of the 2A state playoffs before dropping a 2-1 decision to eventual state-champion Shelby High.

Cuthbertson’s Nelson Garner was named Region 9 2A coach of the year.

Piedmont High also had three players selected to the all-region squad, including seniors Logan Polk, TJ Doster and Jonas Nader.

Doster and Nader both had 22 goals to lead Union County during the regular season. Nader also had 15 assists, which ranked second in UC.

Polk was part of a back line that allowed just 35 goals in 22 matches.

The Panthers finished tied for second in the RRC and ended the year with a 14-7-1 record following a loss to Salisbury in the second round of the 2A playoffs.

Forest Hills was represented by two players, including senior midfielder Jamie Baker and junior midfielder Izzy Zapata.

Baker had two goals and two assists while Zapata finished with five assists and three goals.

The Yellow Jackets went 5-14 and lost to Shelby in the first round of the 2A state playoffs.

East Lincoln had four players make the honorary team while West Stanly had three.
