WINGATE — The Monroe Civitan Club presented awards and installed officers during its Sept. 28 dinner meeting at Wingate University’s LaVerne Banquet Hall.

Jacob Plue was named the club’s Special Citizen of the Year. He is employed by the Wagon Wheel in Marshville and volunteers regularly with The Arc of Union County. Last year, he volunteered 75 hours with the Aktion Club, a group of individuals with special needs who give back to the community by volunteering for special projects. Currently vice president, he will soon be installed as the club’s treasurer.

Bob Johnston was named Citizen of the Year. As a volunteer for the Council on Aging, Johnston delivers meals, transports people to hospitals and doctors’ offices for appointments. He also helps his church and Citivan work groups build wheelchair ramps, coordinates the distribution of Ensure for Union County Nutrition, and participates as a representative for court-sponsored family visitations.

Pat Laney was selected Civitan of the Year. She was instrumental in establishing Junior Civitan clubs at Union Academy and Metrolina Christian School and was recently involved in forming a new Civitan club in Matthews. A member since 1997, she has been secretary, vice president and area director for the Monroe club.

New officers installed were Greg Bass as president; Edie Anderson, ad president-elect; Bonnie Whitley, secretary; and Fred Mark, treasurer.

The club celebrated its 60th anniversary on Monday.
