MONROE
Joseph (Joe) Blair Haigler, MSGT was born on September 23, 1917, the son of Guthrie Blair and Nancy Lathan Haigler.
He was a graduate of Fairview High School and attended the Coyne Electrical Institute in Chicago, IL.
On his return home he joined the United States Air Force as an electrical engineer and continued in that career for 26 years. He served in World War II, the Korean war and the war in Vietnam. During his military service he served in countries all over the world, including Russia, Egypt, North Africa, Italy, Japan, Australia, Vietnam, India, the Philippines, Guam, Greenland, and South America wherever the United States had landing strips. He achieved the rank of Master Sergeant and received many commendations for exemplary service.
Following his retirement from the military, he returned to the family home in Fairview where he was actively engaged in farming, electrical work and being a much loved citizen of the community.
Joe Haigler died on November 2, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Leonard, Earl, and Harry and his sister, Mrs. David (Catherine) Boyles. He is survived by his sister, Mrs. Weldon (Mary Lynn) Jordan of Fayetteville, N.C. and by nieces and nephews, Dr. Sandra Haigler of Lexington, Ky., Mrs. Sara Long of Charleston, W.Va., Dr. Harry Haigler of Irvine, Calif., Mr. David Boyles of Green Mountain Falls, Colo., Dr. Weldon Jordan, Jr. of Davis, Calif., Dr. Richard Jordan of Gastonia, N.C., Dr. Stuart Jordan of Fayetteville, N.C .and Dr. Peter Jordan of Greensboro, N.C. and by fifteen grandnieces and grandnephews.
Services for Joe Haigler are a visitation at Gordon Funeral Service, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, N.C. 28112 Sunday, Nov. 8 from 4 to 6 p.m. and a graveside service at Hopewell Baptist Church on Monday, Nov 9 at 11 a.m. followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall.

Guillermo Hernandez
MONROE
Guillermo Hernandez, 78, of Monroe, died Monday (Nov. 2, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center-Union.
Funeral service was cThursday (Nov. 5, 2009), officiated by Father Thomas Kessler. Interment followed at Monroe City Cemetery.
He was born on June 25, 1931, in Santa Clara, Cuba, a son of the late Antonio Hernandez Pedraza and Leopoldina Dominguez Anoseto. He was a retired electrician.
Survivors include a son, Jose Hernandez, of Monroe.

Geneva Nance
PEACHLAND — Geneva Stegall Nance, 93, died Wednesday (Nov. 4, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center-Union in Monroe.
Funeral will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Deep Springs Baptist Church, with burial in the Harmony Community Church cemetery.
Born May 2, 1916, in Anson County, she was a daughter of the late M.L. and Lula Baucom Stegall.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Nance of Peachland, Lynn Nance of Monroe; one daughter, Pat Felmet of Rock Hill, S.C.; nine grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday in the Deep Springs Baptist Church fellowship building.

CHARLOTTE — Robert Jay “Bob” Pennigar, 91, died Thursday (Nov. 5, 2009) in Hospice House of Union County.

Gaston W. Tomberlin
MONROE
Mr. Gaston Wilson Tomberlin, 84, of Monroe went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, November 5, 2009. He was born August 22, 1925 in Union County, the son of the late James Pernay and Mary Jane Pressley Tomberlin.
Gaston is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Doris Mullis Tomberlin; two sons, Darrell Tomberlin and wife Penny, and Garrett Tomberlin and wife Betty; three grandchildren, Susan Tomberlin Willard, Matthew Tomberlin and Andrew Tomberlin; two great-grandchildren, Brettany Willard and Garrett Kopec; and a brother, Nathan Tomberlin, all of Monroe.
Gaston was a WW II veteran, having served on the front line in the infantry. He was retired from Norton Door Controls (formerly Yale & Towne) after more than 25 years of employment there. Gaston enjoyed fishing, gardening, and giving away peppermint candy.
The service to celebrate his life will be held Saturday, November 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112 with interment at Lakeland Memorial Park. Pastors Jack Hildreth, Bill Funderburk, and Billy Mobley will officiate. The family will receive friends at Gordon Funeral Service one hour prior to the service.
