Deaths for October 11
Sadie Campbell
MINT HILL - Miss Sadie Louise Campbell, age 93, of Matthews, NC went home to her Mansion in Heaven on Friday, October 9, 2009. She was born June 14, 1916 in Union County, NC, a daughter of the late Wade R. Campbell and Cora Clontz Campbell. She was the tenth of eleven siblings. Miss Campbell received Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at Hopewell Baptist Church in Monroe, NC, at the age of twelve. After graduating from Unionville High School, she went on to join the U.S. Navy WAVES during World War II, working with Navy Intelligence. With her GI Bill, she attended and graduated from the University of Denver Colorado, with a B.A. degree in History and English. Her career was with the Civil Service in Charlotte.
Miss Campbell was the last surviving sibling of her family. She is survived by five nephews, Larry Campbell of Mooresville, NC, Johnny Campbell and Dennis Campbell, both of Monroe, NC, Richard Campbell of Greer, SC, and Carl Busby of Waxhaw, NC.
The family will receive friends and relatives from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. Monday, October 12, 2009 at Hopewell Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the church, conducted by The Reverend Dr. Lee Pigg and The Reverend Jim Couick. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.

Billy V. Greene
MARSHVILLE -- MSGT Billy “Bill” Vance Greene, US Air Force Retired, was called to his eternal rest Friday, October 9, 2009. His devoted wife of 63 years, Mary Brooks Greene was by his side holding his hand. Bill was born May 23, 1925 in Union County, NC son of the late Fred P. and Annie Maude Furr Greene. He is also preceded in death by one brother, Lonnie Greene, and one sister, Georgia Clontz.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 13, 2009 in the Gordon Funeral Chapel, 1904 Lancaster Ave., Monroe, NC 28112. Burial will follow at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, 6223 Love Mill Rd., Monroe, NC 28110.
He is survived by his loving children, Darlene, Susan, and Richard, grandchildren, Jennifer, Lori, Lindsay, George, Elizabeth, Joey, Emily, Melissa, Misty and Hannah, step-grandchildren, Sean, Mical, Andre, Kelsey, Liza, and Brandon; great grandchildren, Molly, Kyle and Jayna; brother, Joe Greene; sisters, Margie Medlin, Margaret Hurst and Melvin Helms.
MSGT Greene, a survivor of the D-Day invasion of Normandy, served his country for 26 years. For his bravery in combat during WWII, he was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and 2 purple hearts. He also served in the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War.

Rosanne T. Guertin
CHARLOTTE - Miss Rosanne Theresa Guertin, 45, of Charlotte, died Saturday (October 3, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center – Pineville.

Miss Guertin was born in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, on June 14, 1964, a daughter of Olga Rose Capriano and the late Roger G. Guertin. She was a United States veteran having served as a pilot in the United States Air Force.
Survivors include her fiancé, Nate Peterson of Charlotte; her mother Olga Capriano of Maryland; one brother, Michael Guertin of Massachusetts; and one sister, Carolina Haney of Massachusetts.

Wilhelmina Hamer
MONROE -- Mrs. Wilhelmina “Winnie” Simmons Hamer, age 87, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2009 at Carolinas Medical Center in Monroe, N.C., after a short illness. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Cecilia Hamer of Monroe, N.C., son, Eugene Floyd Hamer, Jr. of Chapel Hill, N.C., granddaughter, Olivia Hamer Rice of Chapel Hill, N.C., sister, Mrs. Jessica “Jonk” S. Lemmonds of Pineville, N.C., and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of forty years, Dr. Eugene Floyd Hamer, M.D., who died on July 26, 1987, brothers, Garnet Simmons and Monroe Simmons and sister, Ruth S. Barrett.
Winnie was born on March 13, 1922 in Halifax County, North Carolina. Her parents, Reuben and Nancy Simmons both died in 1927 and Winnie, a sister and brother were subsequently reared in Thompson Orphanage in Charlotte, N.C.
She graduated from Central High School in Charlotte, N.C. and earned an R.N. degree with the class of 1944 from Grace Hospital School of Nursing in Morganton, N.C.
As an army nurse at Finney General Hospital in Thomasville, Georgia, she treated prisoners of war and others. She retired at the rank of lieutenant. She is honored at the WWII veteran nurses memorial in Washington, D.C.
After her wartime service, she continued her nursing work in Morganton, where she and Dr. Hamer met and married in 1946. They moved to Monroe, where Dr. Hamer’s grandfather, Dr. Constantine Ramsay (a Civil War veteran) had had a medical practice.
Dr. Hamer and Winnie worked together to establish his medical practice above Secrest Drug Store in 1947. Later she worked as a Union County Public School Nurse and as Dr. Hamer’s unofficial visiting nurse.
Winnie was an active member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Monroe, a long time member of the Altar Guild, and worked with civic organizations including the red Cross.
Her brilliant columns in the St. Paul’s Potpourri are sorely missed. Family and friends treasure her needlepoint and other handiwork, as well as the many stories of her mischievous sense of humor. She was well known as “my favorite aunt” in the extended Hamer family. Winnie was the friend and confidante of young and old and was blessed with an abundance of friends; and, she was known for her love and care for both people and animals.
The family will receive friends and relatives for visitation Sunday afternoon, October 11, 2009 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, 204 South Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina 28112.
Graveside services will be held at 12:00 Noon, Monday, October 12, 2009 at the Old Hillside Cemetery in Laurinburg, North Carolina, with Rev. Henry Presler officiating.

MONROE -- Rosa Hargett Smith Hathcock, 104, died Friday, October 9, 2009. She was born in Union County on December 10, 1904, daughter of the late John and Sara Hargett. She was preceded in death by husbands, John E. Smith and Ralph L. Hathcock; three brothers, Rommie, Bud, and George W. Hargett; five sisters Rossie Kee, Betty Haywood, Mary Pruitt, Sara Parks, and Minnie Ross.
A graveside service will be held 11:00 AM Monday October 12, 12009 in Lakeland Memorial Park.
Mrs. Hathcock is survived by daughters Irene Smith Trull of Monroe and Maxine Smith Lattimore of Richland, TX; a sister, Elizabeth “Bright” Benton of Monroe; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, two step sons Ted Hathcock of Charlotte, and Zane Hathcock of Matthews, one step daughter Carolyn Furr of Knoxville, TN. Rosa was a member of Union Grove Primitive Baptist Church since the late 1940’s. Ruth Stegall Moore
MARSHVILLE - Ruth Stegall Moore, 87, of Marshville, died Friday (Oct. 9, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center-Union.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Philadelphia Baptist Church with burial at the church cemetery.
Born Nov. 24, 1921, in Union County, she was the daughter of the late Fred Stegall and the late Veda Edwards Stegall. She was a supervisor for a textile manufacturer.
Survivors include one son, Jimmy W. Moore of Marshville, one daughter, Phyllis M. Hunter of Marshville, four sisters, Hallie Jenkins, Lou Howell, Shirley Pope and Faye Simpson, all of Marshville; four grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 Sunday at the church.

Darrin Lee Sanders
MONROE - Darrin Lee Sanders, 44, of Monroe, died Friday (Oct. 9, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center-Union.

Margaret Hernig Snyder
MONROE -- Mrs. Margaret Hernig Snyder, 89, passed away on Friday, October 9, 2009 at the Jessie Helms Nursing Center, Monroe, NC. She was born in Monroe, NC on August 9, 1920 daughter of the late Jack L. and Azilee Starnes Hernig. Mrs. Snyder was a life member of Central United Methodist Church, a loyal member of Fellowship Bible Class and the Lessie Ann Circle.
The family will receive friends at Gordon Funeral Service, Monday, October 12, 2009 from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM. A private service to praise God and honor Margaret’s life will be held in the Mausoleum at Lakeland Memorial Park.
Mrs. Snyder was preceded in death by her husband Bruce W. Snyder, Jr. She is survived by a sister, Elsie H. Clark of Surfside Beach, SC, a brother, Jack L. Hernig and wife Johnsie of Waxhaw, nieces, Carolyn Williams, Elsie Mitchell, Martha McLaughlin, nephews, Horace B. Clark, Jr., Jack L. Hernig, III, Mark C. Hernig and a number of grand nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff and residence of Union Park Assisted Living for their love and friendships, the staff at Jessie Helms Nursing Center for their loving care and to Margaret’s church family at Central United Methodist for their continuous loyalty.

MONROE -- Calvin Stinson, 72, of Monroe, formerly of Charlotte, died Wednesday (September 23, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center – Union.

Donald Sturdivant
CHARLOTTE
Donald Wayne “Sweepie” Sturdivant, 41, of Monroe, died Wednesday (Oct. 7, 2009) at Carolinas Medical Center-Main.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Christ Bible Discipleship Worship Center in Marshville with burial at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Born April 4, 1968, in Union County, he was the son of Ruby Chambers Mix of Wingate and the late Ivory Vernon Sturdivant.
Survivors include other than his mother; wife Tammy Blakeney Sturdivant; three sons, Donald W. Sturdivant, Jr., Ya Don Sturidivant and Uriah Sturdivant; one daughter, Cyd Blakeney; one brother, Donnell Clyburn; and two grandchildren.
Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Word of God Mission Church, 717 East Park Drive, Monroe, N.C., 28112.

Emily Sweatman
GEORGETOWN, S. C. - Emily Walshock Bunch Sweatman, 82, died Saturday, October 10, 2009, at Tidelands Community Hospice House in Georgetown.
Mrs. Sweatman was born in Sheppton, Pa. on October 11, 1926, a daughter of the late Stephan Andrew Walshock and Susan Potts Walshock. She was a graduate of Liberty High School and attended Bethlehem School of Business. Mrs. Sweatman moved to Charleston, S. C. in 1944 and moved to Georgetown in 1956. She was employed at Sears in Georgetown from 1972 until 1982 and also at Georgetown Memorial Hospital for a time.
Mrs. Sweatman was a member of First Baptist Church, and the Platt Sunday School Class, the Young as Ever group, the Joy Singers, and the Brush Strokes art class at the church. She was a member of the Young at Heart group of Herbert Memorial United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Sweatman was a member of the Georgetown Business and Professional Women. She was a member and past Worthy Matron of Winyah Chapter #148, Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Sweatman was also a member of the Toastmasters Club, Civitan Club, and Navy Club, all of Georgetown. She served as a volunteer for Hospice and Georgetown Helping Hands.
Mrs. Sweatman was predeceased by: her husband, Archie Pinckney Sweatman; and her first husband, John Grant Bunch, Sr.
Surviving are: four sons, John Grant Bunch, Jr. of Shulerville, S. C., Matthew Thomas (Julie) Bunch of Monroe, N. C., Mark Steven (Anke) Bunch of Bowie, Md. and Andrew Luke Bunch of Rock Hill, S. C.; a daughter Susanna Emily Bunch (John) Bullard of Ivanhoe, N. C.; four grandsons; and two granddaughters.
Funeral services will be two o’clock Monday afternoon, October 12, 2009 at First Baptist Church in Georgetown. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted A. Sherrill. Inurnment will follow at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery.
