Monroe wins Firefighters' Competition

The Monroe Fire Department took first place in the 29th annual Union County Fire & Rescue Association Firefighters’ Competition Saturday at the city’s fire tower on Quarry Road. Sandy Ridge Volunteer Fire Department placed second and Mineral Springs Volunteer Fire Department finished third.

The competition features a variety of events, some of which are not known to the participants until they arrive.

In the individual triathlon, Dane Love of Monroe took first place with a time of 2 minutes and 20 seconds. Nick Steffer of Monroe was second in 2:32 and Scott Kimrey of Beaver Lane Volunteer Fire Department was third in 2:42.

Stallings Volunteer Fire Department claimed the sportsmanship award.

Stack Road Volunteer Fire Department was cited for the nicest/cleanest truck, while Stallings received an award for the dirtiest/ugliest truck.

The top three finishers in each of the four events were:

Peg leg: Monroe, first; Sandy Ridge, second; Unionville/Fairview, third.

Mayday, mayday: Waxhaw, first; Monroe, second; Mineral Springs, third.

Team triathlon: Monroe, first; Sandy Ridge, second; Mineral Springs, third.

Missing equipment; Unionville/Fairview, first; Monroe, second; Mineral Springs, third.
