Mavs' Emezie selected for All-Star game
Marvin Ridge High senior John Emezie has been selected to play in the 17th annual Carolinas All-Star Basketball Classic, being held March 22 at Myrtle Beach High.
A 6-5 small forward who has committed to play for Army, Emezie is the first Union County player to average at least 30 points in a season in the modern era (since UC public schools desegregated in 1967).
Emezie averaged 30.4 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 2.2 steals and 2.1 blocks as a senior. He shot 39.1 percent from 3-point range (63-of-161) and 49.0 percent from the field overall.
Emezie helped the Mavericks go 15-10 and reach the second round of the 3A state playoffs.
All-Star participants are nominated by their coach and selected by the coaches' associations from their state.
Of the 10 players on North Carolina's roster, at least eight are expected to dot Division I rosters next season.
North Carolina's D-I signees include: Gabe DeVoe (Clemson), Gary Clark (Cincinnati), Kedrick Flomo (Appalachian State), Connor Burchfield (William & Mary) and Aaron Carver (Old Dominion).
South Carolina has won this All-Star game the last four times in a row.
