Monroe hosting 8-team event in 2015
A high school football event geared toward bringing exposure to Union County will be held at Monroe High next year.
Four regular season games are scheduled to be played over two days as part of the inaugural Union County vs. The Carolinas All-Stars Gridiron Clash.
The event, which is being held Sept. 4-5 of 2015, features four UC teams: Cuthbertson, Weddington, Porter Ridge and the host Redhawks.
The Cavaliers take on Pinecrest in the opening game on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. The Saturday slate includes South Meck vs. Porter Ridge (Noon), Charlotte Christian vs. Weddington (4 p.m.) and Hunter Huss vs. Monroe (8 p.m.).
"It's a great opportunity to have something like this in Union County," said Monroe athletic director Tim Niedermeir. "Charlotte gets all the news and attention, so it's a chance to promote Union County and Monroe. This is something that's been in the works for a few years, so we're very excited about it. It should be a great event."
Niedermeir was approached with the idea by Mark Stafford, who is the owner and founder of 151 Sports Marketing — a company based out of Texas that specializes in the creation, promotion and orchestration of amateur sporting events.
Stafford is originally from North Carolina.
"(Stafford) wanted to bring some events back to this area and do some things around where he's from," said Niedermeir. "We're still a year away, but a lot of work has already been done. One of the ideas we've been throwing around is having a band competition. We're trying to make it bigger than just football. We'd like to award a couple scholarships to players and we're working on getting sponsors to take care of that. We want to turn it into a first-class showcase event."
Niedermeir said he hopes the event becomes annual.
A two-year agreement has been reached with the eight participating teams. The opponents will rotate in 2016.
"We hope this will be long-lasting," said Niedermeir. "We'll always try to have at least four Union County teams. We might have the same teams back. That will just depend on how people like the event."
Tickets for the event will be $10 and that grants admission to all four games.
"If you're a football fan and you want to watch some good football, you'll definitely get your money's worth," said Niedermeir.
