Defending champion Sun Valley off to 2-0 start

Spartans hold off rival Porter Ridge

Sun Valley boys improved to 2-0 in Southern Carolina Conference play with a 63-49 victory over Porter Ridge on Friday night.
The Spartans (9-6, 2-0 SCC) gradually pulled away from the Pirates (4-10, 0-2 SCC) and held off an early fourth quarter rally for the victory in their quest to win the SCC again.
Senior forward Kendall Ratliff had his jumper working and sophomore forward Hakeem Polk was working well down low  — they scored 17 apiece.
Jacquez Johnson and Isaiah Blanchett made a living on free throws as Johnson scored seven of his 11 from the line and Blanchett scored seven of his nine from the line.
Dallas Austin led the Pirates with 10 points.
With only 10 league games, Mason calls the 2-0 start "very important."
"Porter Ridge is improved," Mason said. "They have a new energy, a new coach. They want to come out and prove people wrong. They want to get that first win in the conference that they haven't had in a while and they are hungry. ... There are a lot of good teams in our conference and when we have a chance to win we have to take it."
The Spartans started four seniors against the Pirates but there isn't as much starting experience.
"We're not there yet and we have a lot of room to grow," Mason said. "We're showing glimpses but we're not quite there yet and we have to make sure that when we get up on a team, we continue to get up on them."
The Spartans have relied on their defense to carry the team while the offensive game catches up.
"Number one we're defense, that's what we're built around this year," Mason said. "The biggest thing when I say we're trying to get better, we have to capitalize off those turnovers and off that good defense. When we do that we can build leads. There are of times where we get good steals and don't convert on the other end and that's a run killer. We'll continue to learn to build on that.
"Being 2-0 in this league is a big deal."
Sun Valley plays another 2-0 team next Friday when the Spartans travel to Marvin Ridge.
Porter Ridge will look to break into the win column in conference play at home against Parkwood on Friday.
