Marvin Ridge High's softball team won the 2013 Southern Carolina Conference tournament title with a 6-2 victory over Porter Ridge on Tuesday.
The Mavericks (17-2) broke open a 2-all game with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put away the Pirates (15-6), who won the 4A state championship last season.
Jessica Curtis led off the sixth with a single, followed by another single from Claudia Spinelli, before the Pirates recorded the first out.
Dharma Rosburgh came off the bench to pinch hit and ripped a double off the fence to score Curtis with the game-winning run. The second out was followed by a hit batter that loaded the bases, then a walk to Juliana Moss to score another run.
After another run came home on an error, Ashley McGowan walked to score the fourth run of the inning.
Peyton Jordan went all seven innings in the circle for the win while giving up four hits and striking out three.
"I think it's their determination and drive to win games," Mavericks coach Heather Carnes said. "They want to be number one. On and off the field they work on that. On the field they keep each other up and motivated. When the time comes where we need to be big, every one of my girls will step up. That's something rare. Every girl wants to do well and they want the game in their hands. That is what does it for us."
Carnes is having stellar success in her first year as head coach of the Mavericks, and she's enjoying the journey.
"They are a great group of girls; I couldn't have asked for anything better," Carnes said. "They work hard. They are good girls in the classroom, good girls on the field. They just really pick each other up, which is what I like. No matter what I do or say, they are always there for each other. I like to keep motivated with them. I like to stay up because it wasn't long ago I was on the field and I remember how it felt."
Curtis led the Mavericks' attack with a 3-for-4 day that included a solo-home run.
Spinelli went 2-for-3 and Rosbrugh was 1-for-1 with a RBI double in her only at-bat.
Marvin Ridge hosts Mount Pleasant (11-11) in the first round of the 3A playoffs on Friday starting at 7 p.m. The Pirates begin defense of their 4A state title at the same time on Friday, when they take on visiting Mooresville (11-10).
