Cavs hire former Hopewell coach
David Johnson was introduced as the new head football coach at Cuthbertson High on Wednesday.
Johnson served the same position at Hopewell High the last two years, compiling a 9-14 record during that stretch. He was also the offensive coordinator at Berry Academy for two years prior to his stint at Hopewell.
The 29-year-old Johnson replaces Mike Roark, who resigned in March after coaching the program since its inaugural season in 2009.
"I think it kind of goes back to my roots where I started at Berry Academy, being in the Rocky River Conference," said Johnson of his interest in CHS. "We started playing Cuthbertson when it first opened and I always saw the school as a gold mine. The potential out here, the facilities and the community was something that I was really excited about. I always said to myself that if that job came open I would apply for it because it was just something that caught my eye."
Cuthbertson has never had a winning football season in its first four years of existence.
The Cavs have a lifetime record of 16-31, which includes six wins and state playoff berths each of the last two seasons.
Cuthbertson is coming off a 6-6 campaign in 2012. The Cavs averaged 29.1 points per game while giving up 25.0 ppg.
"I'm an offensive-minded coach," said Johnson. "We're uptempo. We play a no-huddle, spread offense. My roots are in offense, but being the head coach at Hopewell, we've definitely built some roots in defense, too."
Cuthbertson, which has been a 2A program the last four years, will make the jump to the 3A classification in 2013-14.
The Cavs will share a conference with Weddington, Marvin Ridge, Sun Valley, Piedmont and Anson County.
CHS is losing five all-conference players to graduation, but is eligible to return its top two tacklers in junior linebacker Justin Shanahan (105) and sophomore linebacker Joe Walther (104).
"I saw a lot of young talent that was impressive," said Johnson of Cuthbertson's returning players. "We're looking to just build on the success that the school has had and just go from there."
Cuthbertson opens the regular season on Aug. 23 at Parkwood.
