Von Egidy named state wrestler of year
Piedmont High senior Parker Von Egidy has been selected the state's wrestler of the year.
Von Egidy, who finished his career as a three-time state champion and earned a national championship earlier this year, was recently named the Dave Shultz North Carolina Wrestler of the Year by USA Wrestling Magazine.
"It felt great knowing that I'm pound for pound the best for the year," Von Egidy said. "It's just something good to go out on after just winning the national championship. It's a good way to end it."
Von Egidy will receive the award at the North Carolina Wrestling Hall of Fame in Chapel Hill this Sunday.
Von Egidy will witness this year's Hall of Fame induction.
"It's pretty cool, I can't wait to go up there," he said. "It's going to be cool to walk around and look at stuff. That is a goal in the future, to be in the hall of fame and be known as one of the best wrestlers to come out of North Carolina."
Von Egidy will be presented the award by Roy Jones of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. He hopes that he can gain knowledge from some of the state's top wrestlers that have come before him.
"It's an experience because they have been through it," Von Egidy said. "They have a lot of old war stories that they can tell. They've been there and done it all. They've wrestled on the big stages, they've wrestled overseas. It's cool meeting those people who have those stories and experiences, knowing one day you might have those stories and experiences as well."
Von Egidy ranks the award right up there with his national title and the 59-0 record that came along with his third straight state title.
"Out of all the people in North Carolina I got it," said the Missouri signee. "It's up there with the national championship and everything. I'm really excited about it."
