Mavs clinch crown with win over WHS
Marvin Ridge High's baseball team secured the outright Southern Carolina Conference regular season championship with a 4-2 victory over Weddington on Tuesday.
In the school's first-ever baseball game under the lights, the Mavericks clinched the SCC championship when Joe Tietjen struck out Chris Simpson with the bases loaded to end the game.
The Mavs are on a 17-game winning streak, improving their record to 13-0 in the league and 20-2 overall.
"With everything we had going on, the lights, Senior Night, I was really concerned with the focus we'd have on the field," Mavericks coach Mark Mennitt said. "I think our guys came out locked in and ready to play. Weddington played great. I thought we played very good. We had a great pitching performance by Zach (Kuchmaner), and then Joe (Tietjen) coming in and finishing it out."
The Mavericks scored twice in the bottom of the second to take an early lead and added runs in the fourth and sixth innings.
The Warriors cut the lead in half when Davis Norred crossed the plate on a ground ball by Jeremy Schellhorn with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh.
Tietjen led the way offensively for the Mavericks with a 3-for-3 night, including a double and two runs scored.
Kuchmaner picked up the win on the mound with six and two-third innings of work. Kuchmaner struck out seven and walked six while holding WHS to four hits.
Kuchmaner himself at the plate, finishing 1-for-1 with three RBI.
Max Wotell went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored and Kyle Corgan knocked in a run with his only hit of the night.
Weddington started the season 1-4 before a 13-game winning streak, but have lost three of its last four.
WHS enters tonight's home game against Marvin Ridge with a 10-3 league record (15-7 overall).
